Dodgers Add Jedd Gyorko From Cardinals For Stretch Run

With David Freese, Chris Taylor and Kikè Hernandez all on the injured list, the Dodgers added infield depth Wednesday by acquiring Jedd Gyorko from the Cardinals in exchange for lefthander Tony Cingrani and righthanded pitching prospect Jeffry Abreu.

Gyroko has been on the injured list since June 7 but was scheduled to begin a rehab assignment last night before being pulled off with the trade on the horizon.

DODGERS ACQUIRE

Jedd Gyorko, 3B/2B
Age: 30

The power-hitting Gyorko has dealt with back, calf and wrist injuries this year and seen his production fall as a result. When healthy he hit .259 and averaged 20 home runs a year for the Cardinals from 2016-18 and is a capable defender at both third base and second base. He will primarily see time at second base for the Dodgers, where Max Muncy struggled defensively and Hernandez struggled offensively before going on the injured list.

CARDINALS ACQUIRE

Tony Cingrani, LHP
Age: 30

Cingrani is out for the season after having surgery to repair a torn labrum. He is a free agent at the end of the season and will not pitch for the Cardinals unless they sign him to a new contract.

Jeffry Abreu, RHP
Age: 19

Signed as a international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2017, Abreu made his U.S. debut this year in the Rookie-level Arizona League and impressed with his arsenal and control. Abreu’s fastball sits 90-93 mph with cut life and his slider shows potential. He throws strikes and struck out 24 batters against just six walks this season. He has a mature, physical build and generally projects as a reliever.
