Diamondbacks Get Infield Depth With Rosales — College Baseball, MLB Draft, Prospects

THE DEAL

The Diamondbacks have found a temporary solution to their sudden shortstop shortage.

The D’backs acquired veteran Adam Rosales from the Athletics on Monday in exchange for minor league righthander Jeferson Mejia.

The deal comes after Chris Owings sustained a fractured right middle finger after being hit by a pitch on Sunday, followed by Ketel Marte being placed on bereavement Monday after the death of his mother. The Diamondbacks were already without Nick Ahmed, who broke his hand in June and is not expected back until mid-August at the earliest.

ATHLETICS ACQUIRE
Jeferson Mejia, rhp
Age: 22

Mejia was a well-regarded international amateur who signed with the Cubs for $850,000 in 2013 out of the Dominican Republic. The Diamondbacks acquired him 18 months later with Zack Godley for Miguel Montero. Mejia stands 6-foot-7 and was regarded as a promising projection type at the time, but has not developed as hoped. His fastball remains 90-92 mph, he lacks any usable secondaries and has exceedingly poor control. The result was another poor showing in his third straight season in low Class A and a demotion to short-season Hillsboro two weeks ago.

DIAMONDBACKS ACQUIRE

Age: 34

Known as a high-energy player famous for his full-speed home run trots, Rosales has quietly been quite useful against lefties the last two seasons, posting an .809 OPS against southpaws. Though primarily a shortstop this year, Rosales is most experienced at third base and second base, making him a useful bench option for the Diamondbacks even after their shortstops return to action.
