COPABE U-18 Pan-American Championship Scoreboard

USA Baseball’s 18U National Team is currently in Panama competing in the COPABE U-18 Pan-American Championships, attempting to win its fifth straight gold medal at the tournament. 

This page will serve as an updating scoreboard for all the action, highlighting top performers for every game as the tournament unfolds into early December. For a full breakdown of Team USA’s 20-man roster, click here.

Below are Team USA’s results for the tournament, in reverse-chronological order:

MEDAL ROUND

Dec. 2 — USA 17, Panama 2 (Gold Medal Game)

 

 

The USA Baseball 18U team won its fifth straight COPABE Pan-American Championship Sunday night, with a dominant 17-2 victory over host-nation Panama, who previously gave the Americans their sole competitive game of the tournament in a 9-8 US victory in the Super Round. With the win, USA Baseball went undefeated in the tournament and outscored its opponents 131-27 over nine games. 

Top Performers: SS Bobby Witt Jr. went 4-for-5 and hit for the cycle, with four runs and three RBIs. 3B Yohandy Morales went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, two runs and one RBI. LF Corbin Carroll went 1-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs and four RBIs. 1B Tyler Callihan went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, one run and three RBIs. CF C.J. Abrams and 2B Anthony Volpe both went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

While this year’s 18U team will be defined and remember for its efforts offensively, RHP Jack Leiter had a strong showing on the mound, with four innings of shutout, no-hit ball, including nine strikeouts to just two walks. 

SUPER ROUND

Dec. 1 — USA 12, Nicaragua 3

Top Performers: LF Corbin Carroll went 4-for-5 with a home run, a triple, two stolen bases four RBIs and two runs. 1B Riley Greene went 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs, three RBIs and two runs. SS Bobby Witt Jr., DH Tyler Callihan and C Dylan Crews each homered in the game, bringing Team USA’s total to six in their win over Nicaragua. 

Nov. 30 — USA 12, Venezuela 1

Top Performers: RHP Riley Cornelio threw six innings and gave up one earned run. He struck out three batters, walked two and allowed five hits. 2B Anthony Volpe went 3-for-5 with a stolen base, four RBIs and two runs scored. SS Bobby Witt Jr. went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, two runs and two RBIs. LF Corbin Carroll went 2-for-3 with a double, three stolen bases, two runs and one RBI. 

Nov. 29 — USA 11, Canada 2 

Top Performers: LHP Avery Short threw 6.1 innings and allowed two runs, striking out four batters and walking one while scattering seven hits. SS Bobby Witt Jr. went 4-for-5 one run scored and one RBI. 1B Tyler Callihan went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. OF Pete Crow-Armstrong went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. C Drew Romo went 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored.

Nov. 28 — USA 9, Panama 8

The US team took on host Panama, in it’s most challenging game of the tournament so far, which including the Team USA’s first deficit when Panama took a 4-2 lead in the top of the second inning. The US rallied back for seven runs in the next three innings and managed to stymie the Panamanian offense during the eighth and ninth innings to get away with a one-run victory. 

Top Performers: RHP Jacob Meador threw three shutout innings of relief with four strikeouts, two walks and no hits. LF Corbin Carroll went 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks, a stolen base, three runs and an RBI. 2B Anthony Volpe went 2-for-5 with a double and one run scored. DH Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, a walk, two runs and two RBI.

Nov. 27 — USA 13, Dominican Republic 6

In a matchup of the two 3-0 teams in Group A, Team USA faced its most difficult challenge so far during the tournament against the Dominican Republic. RHP Brennan Malone—the No. 4 overall high school prospect in the 2019 draft class—got the call on the mound and struggled with baserunners, but tossed 4.1 shutout innings despite walking five batters and allowing three hits. The American offense continues to lead the way (18U Director Matt Blood said the bats would be a strength of the team) and has now outscored opponents 70-11. 

Team USA clinched the No. 1 overall seed in the Super Round—which starts Wednesday—with the win. 

Top Performers: 1B Tyler Callihan went 3-for-5 with two doubles and also closed the game with one inning on the mound. 2B Anthony Volpe also collected three hits, with a 3-for-5 effort that included a double, two runs and an RBI. SS Bobby Witt Jr. and DH Riley Greene both went 1-for-4 with home runs, while C Drew Romo went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored.

Nov. 26 — USA 15,  Brazil 5

Team USA clinched a spot in the Super Round with their third win of the tournament against Brazil and have outscored opponents 57-5 to this point.

Top Performers: RHP Jack Leiter struck out 11 batters and walked three over four innings of work. 2B Anthony Volpe went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base, two RBIs and three runs. DH Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, three RBIs and three runs. 1B Tyler Callihan went 2-for-4 with a walk, a stolen base, three RBIs and two runs scored. C Drew Romo went 2-for-3 with two walks, three RBIs and one run scored.

Nov. 24 — USA 26, Peru 0

Top Performers: Team USA used one pitcher per inning in a five-inning game against Peru, with Avery Short, Ryan Hawks, Timmy Manning, Riley Cornelio and Max Rajcic each throwing a shutout inning a piece. Just one pitcher (Hawks) gave up a hit, while the five arms combined for nine strikeouts and no walks. LF Corbin Carroll went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two stolen bases, four RBIs and four runs scored. 2B Anthony Volpe went 3-for-3 with a double, two stolen bases, four RBIs and four runs scored. SS Bobby Witt Jr. went 3-for-3 with a triple, a double, five RBI and two runs scored.

Nov. 23 — USA 16, Honduras 0 

Top Performers: RHP Jacob Meador threw four shutout innings and allowed one hit while striking out 10 batters and walking none. 1B Tyler Callihan went 3-for-3 with two doubles five RBIs and two runs scored. 3B Yohandy Morales went 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored. SS Bobby Witt Jr. went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles, a hit by pitch, two RBIs and three runs scored.
