Wednesday’s Stars

Juan Soto, OF, Nationals. Soto hit his 19th home run of the season yesterday, adding to what can be said to be the best season baseball has ever seen from a teenager. Among hitters in Major League Baseball from 1901 to present, Soto’s 19 home runs is the third most ever in a season by a teenager. Soto also has the most walks (70) by a teenager, easily the best on-base percentage (.420), the best slugging percentage (.534), the fifth-best batting average (.305) and the second-best isolated power (.220).

Josh Naylor, LF, Padres. Naylor went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a walk. He helped the San Antonio Missions to an early lead, but . . . 

Keibert Ruiz, C, Dodgers. Ruiz went 2-for-5 with a home run to help Tulsa come back and then the Drillers won on a walk-off wild pitch. 

Ramon Laureano, OF, A’s. Laureano is an example of how players can continue to get better. Laureano was always considered a solid defender with a plus arm. But even scouts who had seen Laureano play for multiple seasons were stunned to watch his epic throw from deep left-center field against the Angels. It was the perfect example of an 80 arm on the 20-to-80 scouting scale, which is at least a grade better than what scouts put on his arm in the minors. Laureano also has improved in center field, where he now has made highlight play after highlight play. Laureano went 3-for-5 with a triple and a stolen base yesterday.

J.P. Crawford, SS, Phillies. Crawford lives! Crawford was brought back to the big league roster on Sept. 4, but even on a team without a true shortstop, Crawford didn’t get his first start since being called back up and he responded by going 3-for-4 with a home run.

Rowdy Tellez, 1B, Blue Jays. Tellez doubled. Of course. Tellez now has 22 MLB at-bats. He has seven MLB doubles. Russell Martin has 289 at-bats for the Blue Jays this year. He has eight doubles.
