Arizona Fall League Fall Stars Rosters

Rosters for the Arizona Fall League’s Fall Star Game—which will be played Saturday—were unveiled Monday, and not surprisingly some of the game’s best prospects were selected.

The West Division roster is stocked by the Glendale Desert Dogs (Astros, Cardinals, Dodgers, Nationals, White Sox), Peoria Javelinas (Orioles, Padres, Mariners, Rays, Reds), and Surprise Saguaros (Pirates, Rangers, Red Sox, Royals, Twins). Peoria manager Jared Sandberg (Rays) will manage the West team.

The most high-profile players for the West include hard-throwing Red Sox righthander Michael Kopech, who’s among the AFL leaders in strikeouts and who has reportedly touched 99 mph in the Fall League; The Rays’ No. 2 prospect, Brent Honeywell, will start the game for the West. After a rough AFL start, Honeywell has not allowed a run in his past two outings, totaling seven innings; Astros righthanders Francis Martes and David Paulino also headline the West squad.

As far as bats, three Dodgers represent the West: first baseman Cody Bellinger, their top prospect at midseason; outfielder Alex Verdugo, L.A.’s No. 4 prospect at midseason, and bat-first second baseman Willie Calhoun, who ranked sixth at midseason. Other players to watch are Twins shortstop Nick Gordon, the son of Tom Gordon and half-brother of the Marlins’ Dee Gordon; slugging Mariners outfielder Tyler O’Neill, who a scout broke down today, and Cardinals outfielder Harrison Bader, their No. 4 prospect at midseason.

The East Division roster fields players from the Mesa Solar Sox (Athletics, Blue Jays, Cubs, Indians Marlins), Salt River Rafters (Braves, Brewers, D-backs, Rockies, Tigers) and defending champion Scottsdale Scorpions (Angels, Giants, Mets, Phillies, Yankees).

Mesa manager Ryan Christensen (Athletics) will manage the East team.

Among the pitchers for the East team are late-blooming Blue Jays lefthander Matt Dermody, a fastball/slider reliever who sits low-90s; fire-balling Tigers righthander Adam Ravenelle, who has hit 100 this season and has allowed just one hit in six AFL innings, and Yankees righthander Dillon Tate—acquired from the Rangers for Carlos Beltran—who has hit 97 mph in the AFL.

Among the hitters are Brewers catcher Jacob Nottingham, a bat-first player who has shown the raw tools and pop times that portend improvement behind the plate; Marlins third baseman Brian Anderson, a plus defender who has had a breakout fall at bat; Athletics’ top prospect Franklin Barreto, who has struggled in the AFL but is coming off a dynamic second half; Gleyber Torres, acquired from the Cubs for Aroldis Chapman, who has shown opposite field power and is among the AFL leaders in slugging; Blue Jays’ top prospect Anthony Alford, who has shaken off the rust from an injury-marred season; Midwest League No. 2 prospect Eloy Jimenez, who took big steps developmentally and showed off all of his tools this season, and Tigers slugger Christin Stewart, who led the Florida State League in homers.

The game will be broadcast on MLB Network and streamed on mlb.com at 8 p.m. Eastern.
