NOTABLE INCLUSIONS

The D-backs weren’t shy about being aggressive with their prospects. Their player pool includes RHP Bryce Jarvis, their first-round pick this year, as well as SS Geraldo Perdomo (No. 2 prospect), OF Alek Thomas (No. 4), OF Corbin Carroll (No. 5), LHP Blake Walston (No. 6), RHP Luis Frias (No. 8) and RHP Levi Kelly (No. 9), none of whom has played above the Class A levels. Their pool also includes No. 1 prospect Daulton Varsho and all four players they acquired from Houston in last year’s Zack Greinke trade: RHPs Corbin Martin and J.B. Bukauskas, 1B Seth Beer and INF Josh Rojas.

NOTABLE EXCLUSIONS

The D-backs left off No. 3 prospect Kristian Robinson, a minor surprise given he’s reached higher levels than fellow prospect Carroll and Walston. He is the only one of the D-backs top 13 prospects not to be included. However, according to BA correspondent Nick Piecoro, the D-backs said Robinson isn’t on the list because he has not been able to return home to the Bahamas, so he’s allowed to work out at the team’s alternate training site at Salt River Fields in Arizona without being on the official player pool. Robinson was later added to the pool in August. OF Yasmany Tomas, who signed a six-year, $68.5 million contract with the D-backs in 2015 but has spent most of the last two years in the minors, was also left off.

PARTING THOUGHTS

The D-backs are a prime contender for a postseason spot and nicely balanced both potential major league contributors and promising but far away prospects on their initial roster. They’ll have the depth to compete without sacrificing valuable development time for their top young prospects.
