2017 State Draft Report: Ohio

CROP RATING
updated_state_rating_five_star Not up to par
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

It’s a down year around Ohio. The state has produced a number of first rounders in recent years including Eric Lauer (2016) and Ian Happ (2015), but this year the Buckeye State is unlikely to see anyone picked on day one of the draft.

J.P. Sorma, 2B/SS/OF, Ashland (Ohio)
Sorma didn’t quite follow up his sensational sophomore season with Ashland, where he hit 17 home runs and slugging .695, but he still paced the team with seven homers and a .590 slugging percentage in what was a solid season, if somewhat disappointing relative to the standard he set for himself in 2016. Sorma runs well and can throw, but will be drafted based on his hitting ability, where he can hit for power and average, successfully using all fields.

Austin Gridley, LHP, Northwest Ohio
Gridely was sidelined in March, April and early with a back injury before returning right at the end of the Racers season. When healthy, he’s a lefty who sits at 90-94 mph with a promising slider.
