2017 State Draft Report: Idaho

CROP RATING
updated_state_rating_five_star One for the books
Rating compares this year’s group to what a state typically produces, not to other states

As is usually the case with Idaho, the vast majority of the prospects come from Lewis-Clarke State, which just won its third straight Avista NAIA World Series title, and the 19th in program history.

The program routinely puts out pro prospects, and currently has 10 different players who are in affiliated ball.

However, a prep product tops the Idaho state list this season, as righthander Andrew Zmuda was close to being in the BA 500. While there aren’t any BA 500 players in this year’s class, Zmuda and several of the college players make it a solid year for the state.

Andrew Zmuda, RHP, Capital HS, Boise, Idaho

Zmuda has a great frame at 6-4 with wide shoulders and a strong chest. He pitches in the upper 80s with his fastball and also has a curve that’s 78-79 mph but could use some work. He’s got a long arm action and cuts himself off on his front side, leading to spotty command at times, but there’s a lot of projection given Zmuda’s body as well as good arm speed.

Connor Brogdon, RHP, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)

Brogdon continued to symie NAIA hitters as a senior after holding them to a .211 batting average during 2016. This spring, Brogdown struck out 99 batters in 80.1 innings on the mound, walking 25 and holding hitters to a .219 average.

J.J. Robinson, INF, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)

Robinson led Lewis-Clark State with 22 home runs this season, and is a big-time power bat from the left side. He had a knee injury during the fall, but managed to recover nicely and put up a .340/.414/.739 triple slash during his senior season after being named to the NAIA All American second-team as a junior.

Micah Brown, INF, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)

Brown is a high energy shortstop with good instincts at the position and a power arm. He can get the ball up to 93 mph on the mound, and had the potential to be a closer for Lewis-Clarke State if he wanted to. He is a 6.8 runner in the 60-yard dash.

Gunnar Buhner, 2B, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)

In 2016, Buhner won the NAIA World Series Golden Glove award for his defense at second base and is the son of Jay Buhner, who had a 15-year MLB career with the Yankees and Mariners, winning his own Gold Glove award in 1996.

Kevin Hamann, RHP, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho)

Hamann led Lewis-Clark State in starts for the second straight year, but was unable to post numbers as impressive as his junior year, when he finished with a 1.99 ERA. This spring, Hamann struck out 65 batters and walked just 10 in 74 innings, posting a 4.26 ERA.
