2017 MLB Draft Demographics

Looking at the demographics of the MLB Draft is a fun exercise, but when you add in a graphic element with Tableau, it’s double the fun. Here’s a look at some of the data to come out of the 2017 draft.

PLAYERS DRAFTED BY AGE
Of the 1,215 players drafted, the oldest was first baseman J.J. Robinson, a 33rd-round pick of the Twins from Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). Robinson was born on Oct. 11, 1992. The youngest is Veterans Memorial High lefthander Noel Vela, drafted by the Padres in the 28th round. Vela was born on Dec. 22, 1999.

DRAFT BY POSITION

54.3 percent of all draftees were pitchers. You can filter for position using the dropdown menu.

DRAFT BY HEIGHT AND WEIGHT
As you’d imagine, draftees—like regular humans—come in all sizes and shapes.

Trevor Koenig, a lefthander from St. Cloud Tech (Minn.) High, is 6-foot-11, and weighs just 185 pounds. On the other end is Vanderbilt’s Ro Coleman, who measures in at just 5-5, 140 pounds.

DRAFT BY CLASS

College players dominated once again, with 771 players from four-year schools getting popped. Another 130 came from junior colleges, 312 from high school and two listed as “no school.”
