Bryce Bonnin

Bonnin was a 26th-round pick of the Cubs out of high school in 2017 and a top recruit for Arkansas that year. He transferred a year later because he wanted to start and the Razorbacks saw him as a reliever. Texas Tech let him start the last two seasons, but the results were mixed. Bonnin’s four 2020 starts leave teams with some significant questions to work through. He was 2-0, 7.36 with 19 hits allowed in 14.2 innings before the season shut down, with two good starts against Northern Colorado and Stanford followed by rough outings against Florida State and Rice. Bonnin has a big arm with a fastball that sits 93-94 mph and touches 96-97. He gets swings and misses with his fastball as well as his above-average, 85-87 mph power slider, and has started to show feel for a mid-80s, fringe-average changeup as well. Bonnin's issue is his command is below-average due to a long arm action and a cross-body, rotational delivery that is hard to keep fully synced up. He also struggles to work deep in games. Most scouts see Bonnin moving back to the bullpen in pro ball because of those two shortcomings, which won't be as much of an issue in relief. Bonnin is a good athlete and has the ability to miss bats (10.9 strikeouts per nine in two years at Texas Tech), so even concerns about his control and future role shouldn’t push him out of the third-to-fourth round range.
