Samson Faltine III (hence the name Trey) was ranked 89th on the BA 500 in 2019, but was considered a strong commitment to Texas, which is why he went undrafted. Faltine arrived at Texas as a versatile multi-position two-way player who could play most anywhere and pitch. As a Longhorn, Faltine has focused on shortstop. He has been Texas’ shortstop for every game the Longhorns have played since Faltine arrived. Faltine is an above-average shortstop defensively who moves fluidly and is comfortable leaving his feet. He has a plus arm, although he does throw from a low three-quarters arm slot, slinging his throws. It does not generally affect his accuracy, but he does not demonstrate the ability to throw from multiple arm slots that scouts like to see from shortstops. Scouts are sold on Faltine’s defense, but there are concerns about his bat. He has average power, but a pull-happy approach helped him hit 15 home runs through the super regionals. It also has made him an easy target for pitchers who give him a heavy diet of offspeed pitches away. Faltine’s 35% strikeout rate is concerning, and will likely limit him to the fourth-to-sixth round range.
