Goodbrand bounced around quite a bit in his college career. He had Tommy John surgery out of high school and redshirted as a freshman at Arizona State in 2014, transferred to Saddleback JC for a year, transferred again to Irvine Valley JC, and finally landed at UC San Diego. Goodbrand began the year in the Tritons bullpen before forcing his way into the rotation and went 6-0, 2.32 to help UCSD reach the semifinals of the Div. II World Series. Goodbrand has arm strength with a fastball up to 96 mph but has long struggled with wildness. He took steps toward correcting that at UCSD and threw more strikes than ever before, albeit still with a steady dose of walks, wild pitches and hit batters. Goodbrand has to develop his slurvy breaking ball and fringe-average changeup as well as improve his control, but his arm strength and successful season have him on evaluators radars.
