Zech was a star quarterback at Naples, totaling 1,531 yards of offense and 20 touchdowns as a junior. He hit .296/.408/.419 that spring and then spent the summer hitting sixth in the lineup for his travel team. But he gave up football and has exploded this spring, as he posted a .543/.615/.956 slash line and was named district player of the year. Scouts have taken note of Zech's progression. In the past, he was most notable for his well-above average speed, athleticism and projectability. But he's moved up draft boards as he's begun to put everything together. His hand-eye coordination helps him consistently put the bat on the ball and his speed makes him a threat on the base paths. He has some pop and has room to add more strength in his 6-foot-1, 190-pound frame, but power isn't likely to be a big part of his game at the next level. His speed helps him run down balls in center field and could one day make him an above-average defender. While Zech's raw tools and performance have made a big impression this spring, he doesn't have much of a track record. Still, his athleticism and potential may be enough to entice a team to sign him away from his commitment to South Florida.
