Wotell has exceptional projection. He's 6-foot-3 with a wiry frame and loose arm, and already has the ability to run his fastball up to 93. The lefthander has an unconventional delivery, with his back foot sliding across the rubber to the third base side as he loads his hips. Still, Wotell has a well-coordinated lower half and maintains balance very well, leading some scouts to believe he will be able to develop a repeatable delivery with refinement. Wotell has a live arm action with a wrap in the back and power through a low three-quarters slot. His breaking ball has tight spin and projects as at least an average pitch for him, and he has shown some feel for a changeup. Committed to Arizona, Wotell has an exciting mix of athleticism and potential for three pitches, and his present stuff could allow him to slide right into the rotation for the Wildcats, should a team not be able to meet his asking price.

Wotell won Gatorade high school player of the year honors in North Carolina in 2015, when he went 13-0, 0.57 as a senior at Marvin Ridge High in the Charlotte area. He signed for $775,000 as a thirdround pick in 2015, forgoing a commitment to Arizona, and he worked nine abbreviated outings in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League after he logged 72 innings in the spring. Standing at 6-foot-3, Wotell can add strength to his wiry build and perhaps oomph to his 89-91 mph fastball that tops out at 93 and approaches the plate with sinking and tailing action. He throws a nasty slider with tight spin from a low three-quarters slot, and his changeup improved over the course of 2015 and projects to at least average. He struck out 16 batters in his first 11 pro innings, which is a credit to his control and three-pitch mix but also a deceptive delivery in which he slides his back foot across the rubber to the third-base side as he loads his hips. He maintains balance in his delivery but wraps his wrist at the back of his arm swing, so maintaining his release point will be crucial for the development of his secondary pitches. Wotell could jump to low Class A Columbia and its six-man rotation with a good spring in 2016.
