Vander Tuig showed 90-93 mph fastball velocity as a high school junior, but his draft prospects were derailed when he had Tommy John surgery and missed his senior year in 2010. He recovered in time to post a 2.90 ERA in 28 relief appearances as a freshman at UCLA, then helped lead the Bruins to Omaha as the Saturday starter last year. He has been the model of consistency as a junior, going 9-3, 1.79 with 63 strikeouts and 11 walks through 90 innings. Vander Tuig's stuff is the same every time out. He commands his 88-92 mph fastball well to all four quadrants of the zone, and his changeup is a solid-average pitch with good tumble. He is confident throwing that pitch to righties as well as lefties, and he mixes in a slider/cutter effectively. The pitch lacks the tilt of a true slider or the power of a true cutter, but he has had success using it to induce ground balls. He also throws a curveball that remains a work in progress. Vander Tuig has a durable, athletic 6-foot-3, 195-pound frame and a clean arm action, though scouts aren't in love with his start/stop delivery. He could become a back-end starter if he can refine his breaking stuff, and he should be drafted in the top five rounds.
