The Marlins could have signed Gunter last summer for $200,000 after taking him in the 19th round out of a Texas high school, but they didn't want to pay any draft tax by exceeding their overall bonus pool and wouldn't budge past $174,400. Gunter backed out of a commitment to Kansas State and headed to Grayson County so he would be eligible for the 2013 draft. Scouts prefer him as a pitcher, but he wants to sign as a third baseman, which could affect where he gets selected. Using a 90-92 mph fastball and a decent slider, Gunter posted a 0.56 ERA and a 26-3 K-BB ratio in 16 innings as a closer for the Vikings. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder provides lefthanded power at the plate, though he generates it more with strength than bat speed. He has a disciplined approach, using the whole field and leading national juco players with 59 walks in 52 games. His arm strength is obvious and enables him to make plays at third base, though he has below-average range and speed and eventually could wind up at first base. Scouts praise his makeup.
