Brill was drafted by the Mets out of an Illinois high school in 2014 in the 24th round but didn't feel ready to sign. His lone Division I offer was from Appalachian State, where he hit more than he pitched his first two seasons. He required Tommy John surgery and missed 2016 and returned with a vengeance in '17, exploding up draft boards thanks to the explosiveness of his fastball. Physical at listed 6-foot-2, 215 pounds, Brill has plus arm speed and a big fastball. He came out of the gates in the low 90s, showed 94-97 mph velocity consistently when going well and produced some reports of 99s. His fastball has finish and he can spin a breaking ball, an inconsistent slider with some power. A reliever all the way, Brill threw just 42 innings in college and is 22 already, but his arm strength and arm speed may be hard for scouts to avoid taking high. perhaps as a money-saver in the first five rounds.
