Drafted in the supplemental 1st round (33rd overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2000 (signed for $950,000)

Big and strong, McGowan also has one of the smoothest arm actions in the draft. He was dominant early with a 94-95 mph fastball, hard slider and good feel for pitching. He worked his way into becoming a fringe first-round pick before a bout with tendinitis caused his velocity to drop. He was shut down early, finishing the season with a 7-2, 1.23 record and 127 strikeouts in 63 innings.
