Track Record: Willems, a Curacao native, has played at four different levels in three seasons with the Reds, but he is still looking for his first game above Rookie ball. He's yet to post an on-base percentage above .300. However, Willems has shown potential as a middle infielder with some power potential and solid hand-eye coordination. Willems did see a jump in power by hitting eight home runs in 2018.
Scouting Report: Willems is a bat-first infielder with good bat speed. He has a clean swing that gets started with a small leg kick. His barrel control has helped his raw power to translate more into games. An aggressive approach at the plate causes him to have difficulty getting on-base consistently, but he does do a solid job of putting bat to ball. In the field, he grades as tick below average at second base. He can fill in at third base, but is below average there at best. Willems is an average runner and shows a solid average arm.
The Future: An improvement in offensive approach will be the next step for Willems before he gets any at-bats in full season ball. He should be able to stick at second base, but his bat will have to carry him to a backup infielder profile.
