Boston College produced a pair of players drafted in the top two rounds last year with Brewers first-round center fielder Sal Frelick and second baseman Cody Morissette, who went to the Marlins in the second round. Gold played primarily third base on that team and has flipped over to second base this year as the Eagles’ top hitter. There isn’t a plus tool with Gold, but his bat-to-ball skills and track record—both in the ACC and the Cape Cod League—stand out. Coming off a .309/.401/.557 season, Gold has some stiffness to his swing, but he’s usually on time with a low swing-and-miss rate and good plate coverage. Gold’s swing is geared to drive the ball in the air, with much of his damage coming against pitches down in the zone, though it’s still a hit-over-power profile with a chance for 15-20 home runs. A tick below-average runner, Gold has the hands for the infield and an average arm, but his range is below-average at second base.
