Coming out of high school, Long was hesitant to give up on his love of basketball, though his exceptional athleticism, 6-foot-10 frame and potential for an above-average fastball all pointed to a future on the mound. The Giants took a shot at Long in the 38th round in 2012, but he wasn't ready to give up basketball, and opted for a postgrad year before moving on to play both sports at Wagner. Long began to blow up last summer in the NECBL, sneaking his fastball up to 95 and sitting in the low 90s. Long's breaking ball shows potential, and some scouts grade it as a future average pitch. The Connecticut native shows advanced ability to repeat his delivery, though, as is often the case for tall pitchers, he can struggle to find a consistent landing point and his release point can sometimes get out of whack, which has some scouts projecting him as a reliever at the next level. If he can figure things out, Long has a very high ceiling, but as can always be said with a 6-foot-10 pitcher, he's also very risky.
